Joan
Potter - Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, she later received
her BFA from the Massachusetts College of Fine Art. Shortly thereafter,
in the late 50's, she moved with her husband to Okinawa, Japan.
There she worked in graphics and production for a newspaper and
taught watercolor painting. In the mid-60s, she returned to
New York and enrolled in the Art Students League where she developed
her passion for "the Dutch School" of painting under her
mentor, David Leffel.
Today, she enjoys
national recognition for her still lifes, which utilize a number
of Dutch attributes. These qualities include light emanating from
the dark and maintaining a strong focal point within the composition.
Potter applies the elements of "drama and mystery" in
her selective focus within each painting. She has a long list of
awards from such prestigious groups as Allied Artists of America,
Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, American Artists Professional
League and Grand Central Art Galleries. A number of publications
have featured her work including Southwest Art Magazine, December
2003 (cover and interior article).
